Like everyone with a connection to the city, New Orleans ex-pat Amber
McGregor was horror struck as news filtered out of the city in the
aftermath of hurricane Katrina. News came not through mediated images
(to which she has a strong aversion), but through the stories of the
people who escaped before and after the floods and eventually, on her
return home, from those who stayed behind.
The work that followed, dubbed the Population Series, was born out of
that tragedy but has grown to respond to and reflect the patterns of
all people who are displaced either by natural phenomenon or the
mundane disaster of the post modern condition.
